Collect and Organize Your Packing Items

To simply your packing operation, you or your Henrico VA moving company first select one room in your home to be your packing area. It should be easy to clean out and access this room as you will need to pack it up first before using it to store and organize all of your packed boxes and supplies. The garage or a rarely used spare room are often best for this purpose.

Based off time efficiency, it may seem more efficient to race to a homeware store and collect all the packing supplies you need. However, this may not be the case. With many moving supply firms (such as Home Depot and Lowes) now offering next day or even same day delivery, you will usually save a decent amount of money by ordering professional supplies. It may even be worth losing a day’s packing time so be sure to weigh your options before buying your needed packing supplies.

Your supplies may include a number of new and unopened marker pens, box sealing tape and dispensers, scissors, bubble wrap, plain newsprint, labels, boxes, and a dolly.

Pack With a Strategy

As a rule of thumb, look to pack up your least used items first. There is nothing more inefficient than having to scavenge through a packed box in order to retrieve something you need during or after your move.

Methodical packing can be achieved by focusing on one room at a time. It doesn’t really matter where you start. Henrico VA moving companies prefer to get the more daunting rooms out of the way first while others like to start easy to get the ball rolling.

We have written other guides for more detailed packing advice but as a rule of thumb, heavier/fragile items should go in smaller boxes and lighter ones in big boxes. Try to eliminate all empty spaces when packing, including those inside, between, and around items inside your boxes. Your goal is to prevent as much movement in your boxes as possible.

When you have finished a box, label it and move it to your packing area. Stack boxes neatly with the heavier ones on the bottom.

As you pack up each room in your home, leave aside anything you are going to need urgently in the first couple of days at your new home.

At the end of the packing process, you or your Henrico VA movers should be left with a room full of packed boxes with every other room stripped down to the big items of furniture plus those essential items you set aside for your first couple of days post move. Choose an appropriately sized box and go from room to room collecting your essentials together in an ‘Essential Box.’
